Gapminder Screencast and Analysis

Analysis

For variable set one I chose Agriculture(% of GDP) and Income Per Person(GDP per capita).  For variable set two I chose Extreme Poverty(% people below $1.25 a day) and Improved water source, rural access(%).

The less Agriculture(% of GDP)  means a country is more developed as less people are involved in the primary sector of labor.  The higher Income Per Person(GDP per capita) means a country is more developed as people produce profitable goods.   The lower Extreme Poverty(% people below $1.25 a day) interprets to people making more money, therefore a country is more likely to be developed.  The higher Improved water source, rural access(%)  means more people living in rural areas have access to improved water sources meaning a country is more developed.

For variable set one, the higher GDP and low Agriculture % of GDP means the country is wealthy because people make more and usually less people are involved in Agriculture.  Mainly European countries, North American countries and South East Asia countries have a high GDP and low Agriculture % of GDP because people there are mainly engaged in service type jobs because less people have to work in the primary sector.  This is because many farms/ranches are operated by few people yet have high yields.
In variable set two, countries with low Extreme Poverty(% people below $1.25 a day) and high Improved water source, rural access(%) are wealthier because their governments can improve a water source for their people.  These countries are usually European, North American and South East Asia countries.

I believe the reason for these trends have to do with geographic luck.  Most of the countries that rank high for these development categories are in optimal places.  They also have completed the demographic transition and have a high HDI.
